#instafarm #8: first one out of the gate
Two days ago, the first lamb of the season finally arrived! (Who said Friday the 13th was bad luck?)
Everything went perfectly.
The momma ewe knew exactly what to do, and the baby lamb was up on her feet quickly, feeding and bonding with her mom.
Antonio and I moved the pair over to “the maternity ward,” another section of the barn where we’ll be housing any new moms and lambs.
As I held the lamb in my hands, getting the mom to follow us as I moved towards the maternity ward, she kicked her legs out hard.
I have never felt a new lamb show so much strength.
After we got them into their new home, I said to Antonio, “Let’s name her.”
He suggested Black Stallion. After thinking about it, I agreed that the name was fitting.
This baby lamb is strong, curious and healthy. And she was the first one out of the gate.
She lets out little a little cry every once in a while (to which momma replies back with that low, funny-sounding grunt), but I can tell that she’s pretty confident already.
It’s the best thing when you see a new birth go down beautifully like that.
The pregnant ewes are, in general, pretty late with their births. But now that the first one is out of the gate, maybe the rest will follow soon. 🙂
